It’s a good tradition (at least in Russia) to finish off everything you started before the year ends. And even though my mind is totally not ready for Instagram right now (a new wave of my depressive disorder covered me with endless fatigue) I wanted to show you the end result. The reason why I didn’t want to show this for several months is that this painting is probably one of my favorites this year and I know that Instagram won’t do it justice. The adjustments of the algorithm plus my summer break are the reasons why I won’t post a “top nine” this year. This painting was made several months ago for @portraitchallenge_ and the photo was chosen from the portfolio of @juliaralle , the model is @mariaklyuch
The finished oil sketch. That would make no 4 in my entire oil practice. I really need to make more of these. The background was a no-brainer, since I just took all the paint from my palette and used the method, which I love using in digital portraits: smudged paint. It’s so cool how you can make mistakes and just paint over them. Even the hair wasn’t a big deal in the end. Btw, I didn’t use any black paint here, none at all. All the black you see here is either blue or brown.
The drawing for this piece is one of my most popular posts this year. It happened back in March. But when I sat down to paint it, I hated the result. Dull, unnatural, totally off my expectations. I didn’t even take a photo of it. Two weeks ago I thought “It can’t get worse.” and started retouching it. 30 additional minutes moved this piece from the abyss of fails to one of the most interesting portraits that I did this year. Just look at the smooth texture, the shifts in hue! Based on a photo by @kazantsevalexey

I never did an #artvsartist before, can you imagine that? Crazy. This photo of myself is already 6 years old and my hair had survived several transformations. I kind of miss this haircut... new year, new hair?

🇷🇺⤵️ - I posted the results of the first layer in the stories and I hate to admit it, but the situation got out of my control in the first step (2nd slide). Last night I got so caught up in the process, that I forgot about the world around me, and then I suddenly looked up at the clock: I only had about 6 hours of sleep left. I hope that by the end of this week I can show you the finished result, with details. Somehow there's a lot to do and do little time, all of a sudden.

🇷🇺⤵️ This is the preparation for a watercolor painting. No kidding. Or maybe oil? I could do both now, anything is possible, just because I have a pack of charcoal paper. After the frustrating experience with spoiled paper I decided to restructure my process, so that I can replicate a sketch easily in case anything should go wrong. I also discovered a great side effect: Now I have more freedom to play around with the sketch without the fear of damaging any watercolor paper, which always pits a high pressure on me. The tone in the sketch will also be useful in the painting process. Original photo was featured in Vogue Italia and belongs to @rachel_stewart_photography
