End of the year and I feel like it’s time to wrap it up with an #artvsartist2022 , some of my works this year along with my face. The face that you see here is the old Irina. The new one just became one year older. Today. I share my birthday with Henri Matisse. Isn’t that a wonderful thing? The birth date and artistic creativity aren the only things that we have in common. But I’ll tell you more about it some other day. Chapter 2022 is almost finished.
Studio vibes and a WIP. It's a lot of "first times" for me in this piece. First time a figure in watercolor on a whole sheet. I always underestimate the amount of paint needed. First time painting drapery. I didn't go to art school, so I never practiced these. And it's the first time I'm working as a commercial artist rather than an enthusiast. This piece is being made with the goal to eventually sell it.
I have this piece hanging over my bed and when I wake up I see it. No matter what will come in the future, which paintings I will create, how well my work will be received, this one will always stay my favorite. I keep staring into the very depth if the shadows, sinking into the abstract background, observing the lights reflecting off the wrinkles of her clothes... So many things about this piece which I did right based purely on intuition. Trust your intuition. It's the only thing that you can rely on as an artist.
You wanted more pictures from inside the studio? There you go! The preview of my latest finished piece. Boom, baby! 💥 The next one is already in the making
I have issues with posting paintings, which I don’t approve of myself. This one bothers me in terms of composition and color. Thank God watercolors have a technical “final stage” on the brink of overdoing, much unlike oils, which you can alter all your life. But nevertheless, while I’m busy in my new studio, working on new paintings, it’s only logical to show you all the older ones first.

I recently found out that the genre in which many artists out there including myself is NOT portraits. The Flemish artists had a category of paintings called "tronie". It literally means "head" and the purpose of such a piece was not to achieve likeness but to show characteristic features and technical mastery. The most popular subjects were old people, young women, or interesting facial expressions. It's assumed that Vermeer's famous "Girl with a Pearl Earring" is an example of a tronie.
